Aquaculture

Fish is a staple food.

It is an important source of animal protein, and it plays an important role in healthy and balanced nutrition due to Omega- 3 and certain minerals it contains. In the developed countries having economic and social welfare, fish consumption is increasing steadily.

  • Unfortunately the natural fish resources of the world are constantly decreasing due to excessive fishing and contamination. On the other hand, fish is a food which is needed to be consumed during the fishing ban seasons also. At that point, aquaculture industry undertakes an important role, and ensures the supply of fish all the year long, by breeding fishes in a controlled way both in the seas and in inland waters. For that reason, the world countries give much importance to aquaculture sector, and provide all kinds of support for its development.
  • Today, the total fisheries production of the world amounts to 143 million tons; and 51 million tons of that amount is produced through aquaculture.

Our country, being surrounded by sea from three sides, has a vast potential for aquaculture activities. The total fisheries production of our country –including fishing and fish breeding- was 646 thousand tons in the year 2008; 24 % of that amount was obtained through breeding.
Aquaculture sector has achieved a remarkable development, and has by now become and agriculture-industry sector.

Particularly since the year 2008, the fish farms which were brought to deep open seas has started using modern and advanced technologies in their off-shore systems. The fishes bred in those farms are supplied to the market in fresh cooled or frozen forms, after being processed in facilities complying with the national and international quality and hygiene standards (HACCP, ISO, BRC, IFS). In the same facilities, the added value of the fishes are increased further by preparing them in other forms (filleted or else) before supplying to consumption. On the other hand, exportation of fisheries have an important share in overall agricultural exports of our country, and constitute an important source of foreign exchange with an export value approaching to 423 million Dollars. In the EU markets, the fishes produced in our country have a market share of 25 %. The contribution of aquaculture sector in the economic development of our country is increasing everyday, with its production, exportation, and employment dimensions. In the short term, it is targeted to increase the production to 250 thousand tons, and the exports to 600 million dollars.

Aquaculture In Earth Ponds In our enterprise, which deals with breeding sea fishes in earth ponds, salt-water resources at a depth of 30-70 meters underground are utilized by opening artesian wells and using pumps.

On lands which are not much suitable to be used for agricultural purposes, the underground waters which are either brought to surface by opening artesian wells, or reach the surface through natural ways have the properties convenient for breeding certain types of sea fishes. Temperature of the underground water supplied both from the springs and from artesian wells is constant at 19 0C. This provides an advantage in using the earth ponds as a hatchery for producing seed fishes, or as fish adaptation facilities. Ø Stock concentration for fish breeding is about 8- 9 kg/m3. In the earth ponds, mostly sea breams and sea basses are bred; however some other species like umbra, granyos, and turbot.  Ø It is seen that the fishes bred in earth ponds show characteristics very close to those living in natural environments. This is due to the fact that the fishes living in earth ponds eat the zooplanktons and minerals existing there, and thus they are nourished through natural foods, besides the feeds given to them

Why earth ponds for fish breeding?
  • The fishes bred

in earth ponds show characteristics very close to those living in natural environments.

  • The agricultural areas

having high salt concentration in the soil can be used for alternative food production purposes.

  • Land transportation

    opportunities.

  • Easy

    harvesting.

  • The opportunity

to increase the current stock concentration of 8-9 kg/m3 up to 30-40 kg/m3 by using different techniques.

  • eat the zooplankton

    and minerals existing there.
